Evaluating ecological risk of heavy elements (cadmium, nickel, lead and mercury) in water and surface sediments, Hendijan port

Abstract:   (413 Views)
In this study, the concentration of heavy metals, i.e. cadmium, nickel, lead and mercury were determined and geochemical indices such as Müller index, enrichment coefficient, comprehensive index of pollution factor, pollution index (PI), pollution load index (PLI) were evaluated by sampling the water and sediment from the Hendijan port; and the ecological hazard risk of these metals was also investigated. Ten stations were chosen in different areas (for example, sewage inlets, points where boats contact and boats, etc). Then, in each station, three water samples and 3 surface sediment samples (simultaneously in each station) were collected. Metals with the highest average concentration in water were nickel, lead, cadmium and mercury, respectively, while in sediment, they were nickel, lead, mercury and cadmium, respectively. CF values in sediment were moderate for cadmium and moderate in nickel water. EF values suggested that cadmium was at a very high level in water and sediment. According to the Er and IR index, cadmium in water and sediment at the surface were at a significant risk level with mercury being at a moderate level in water. The results demonstrate that cadmium is the most important metal causing pollution in the area. This is showed such metals as mercury and nickel also cause hazards, with lead creating hazards in sediment. Because studies such as the present is scant in the area, the findings of the present study indicated that it is necessary to estimate the amounts of basic elements via various scientific studies in the future to more accurately examine metal pollution in the area.
